Oh gradepoint, this was a sad episode for me. You wanna know why? Because of something Gene said, hoping Fargo wins the Best Picture of 1996. Sad because that magnificent, perfect film by the geniuses Joel and Ethan Coen, lost to The English Patient! English Patient is a fine film, but it’s not in Fargo’s league! This picture was so original, that pregnant police chief Marge Gunderson, so beautifully played by Frances McDormand, was one of the most original in film history. I’ve seen the picture at least a half a dozen times, it’s one of my favorite films. My top 3 that year 3. Secrets and Lies, 2. Lonestar. 1. Fargo (tons the best film). Great stuff gradepoint, my thanks as always keep em coming.

My personal top 10 of 1996:

1. The People vs. Larry Flynt
2. Bound
3. Crash
4. Hamlet
5. Scream
6. Fargo
7. Looking for Richard
8. Primal Fear
9. The Hunchback of Notre Dame
10. The Long Kiss Goodnight

I also wanna say that - while I wouldn’t put it on a best of the year list - Jack is underrated. I think people tend to give it grief because it was directed by Francis Ford Coppola, and doesn’t really fit into his oeuvre. However, I found the film to be pretty funny, and very, very sad at times.

My bad, the number 10 on my personal top 10 list is Sling Blade, not Primal Fear.

Crash was an after school special - not a serious film
