Siskel and Ebert forget how frightening the 1939 "Wizard of Oz" is. Like many kids, I found the scenes with the witch to be intense. Of course, the magic and sweetness override any scariness.

Making a sequel to one of the greatest films ever probably isn’t easy, but "Return to Oz" shouldn’t have even been a thought let alone a movie.

Seeing them destroy the hell out of Return to Oz makes die a little inside.

I very much enjoy Return to Oz, I think it’s a great picture. No, it’s not as good the original movie, but nothing can beat a classic.

The only reason Return To Oz wasn’t a gigantic bore was because of the freaky weelers and headless lady.

It appears that Siskel and Ebert never bothered to read the Oz books by L. Frank Baum. The 1939 film is completely different in tone from the actual books. Walter Murch’s Return to Oz is more faithful, which they don’t seem to understand. Read Murch’s thoughts on why he made the film in The Conversations with Walter Murch.

Just because it’s closer to the books doesn’t make it a good movie.

Obviously not. But they make the claim that this movie is inspired by recent high tech special effects movies and not in tone with the 1939 original. Read interviews with Walter Murch. He wanted to go back to the books. The 1939 movie doesn’t even resemble the tone of the actual book, really.

I haven’t seen return to Oz, but I feel like S & E didn’t even give it a chance. It feels like so many people that go around complaining about remakes, which although a lot aren’t any good, do sometimes turn out to be great films (I’ll name Peter Jackson’s King Kong and Ben-Hur as examples). Why not remake a movie? it’s not like when they do they break into your house and destroy the old one.

I had high hopes for Return to Oz, but I found it rather dreary. I did like DARYL.
