Some underrated sleepers on this episode. Dear America is a must-see, and I’ve always liked The Couch Trip, despite mixed reviews. Rent-a-Cop would show up on their worst of the year list.

GREAT episode! I loved the last ten seconds of the COUCH TRIP review when Gene gets smug and uppity, and it carries over into FOR KEEPS. This is where Siskel & Ebert excelled: taking potshots at one another while still remaining fair and passionate in their own viewpoints. Keep up the great uploads! Loving them!

Roger: "I agree with you that the screenplay could have been--"

Gene: "Written by a thousand monkeys; a thousand dumb monkeys."

Not trying to be rude, but it looks like Roger had a stroke in this episode. The way he talks out the side of his mouth.

Never seen him do that before.

That’s a bit eerie, since Roger died from thyroid/salivary cancer 25 years later, he does look a bit under the weather here.

I remember the For Keeps trailer and the remark about the gerbil played constantly. I also remember watching Letters From Vietnam in my Social Studies class in May/June 1988. I think my teacher taped it from HBO. Michael J. Fox and Matt Dillon were the most vivid voices to me at the time.

mmmfloorpie - Ebert had just had surgery for salivary cancer, which affected his speech. That cancer would return 15 years later which would ultimately become the cause of his death.
