Roger: There’s also a lot of psychological gore, Gene.

Gene: Well... what is psychological gore, Roger? In other words, when you call it a gorefest, that means blood!

Strongly disagree with Gene on The Big Lebowski. I couldn’t believe that Gene didn’t like the movie or the Jeff Bridges The Dude character, as I thought The Dude was one of the best movie characters of all time, of course along with John Goodman’s Walter Sobchak who I think really steals the show. Along with Fargo, one of my top ten movies of the ’90s.

I know this sounds cheesy, but the movie Twilight review made me wonder what they’re review would be like if they reviewed Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight.

The Big Lebowski didn’t really become popular with audiences until 6 or 7 years after its release when it was rediscovered on video and television. It wasn’t very well received in 1998 largely because it was perceived as inferior to Fargo.

I hate to say it but I think Gene had a bad habit of judging films made by certain filmmakers after they’ve made a great one too harshly. Like here with the Coens, he absolutely loved Fargo but seemed to judge the Big Lebowski as completely inferior and thus not a good film. He did the same with the Disney animated movies after he saw The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast. He’s a great critic though. I love listening to his reviews.

As for the Big Lebowski, I was curious in seeing it but when I started watching it, I was really confused as to what was going on but as soon as I saw where the film was going, I really loved it, especially the Dude and Walter.
U.S. Marshals is just awful. Not only was the fugitive not very interesting but the tone just felt absolutely wrong. I was actually hoping to see more of Dr. Kimball because he’s my favorite character in the original Fugitive movie. Plus if you’re going for a straight serious crime film, I don’t think its a good idea to start with the main hero disguised in a chicken suit

I wonder what Gene would think of ’Burn After Reading’. I love the Coen brothers and Lebowski is a classic.

Gene gives Hush thumbs up and Lebowski thumbs down. Oh Gene. I have a feeling Gene would have reversed that opinion if only he was still around with us.
