The Brady Bunch movie was hilarious, and as someone who grew up watching the series, I totally got the jokes.. apparently our guys did not. Also disappointing to hear that they disliked Adam Sandler even being on screen. That’s sure to taint any review :P

Two VERY different comedies.. one a smart parody, the other stupid but entertaining, both funny & both badly reviewed. And Perhaps the guys were so upset about ’Hoop Dreams’ they were unable to enjoy anything.

Hey firstmagnitude,

Any idea if you’ve got other shows from around the same period as this one? I noticed "Before Sunrise" mentioned on this show as a movie Siskel & Ebert had reviewed recently. I’ve been hoping the show with that review would be posted at some point ("Before Sunrise" is a favourite of mine).

You know, I always liked these type of episodes, the (almost) thumbs down episodes.

I really enjoyed their bash against the academy. Always fun to see what negative things they have to say.

To be honest, I actually did enjoy "Billy Madison" and "The Brady Bunch Movie". It has dumb and lame humor, but I find it amusingly funny.

"Mr. Payback" however, was an epic fail for an Interactive game played at movie theatres. Even Christopher Lloyd couldn’t save it, yet alone Billy Worth from "Baywatch".

Very interesting topic on Academy bashing for not nominating "Hoop Dreams" for "Best Documentary", considering that it was the best movie of all time. That segment is included on the Criterion DVD of "Hoop Dreams".

@ 19:06. The nominated documentary the Roger saw was "Maya Lin: A Strong Clear Vision", which won the Oscar that year. He gave it three stars.

I normally agree with Siskel and Ebert on everything except 90’s screwball comedies.

Billy Madison,Happy Gilmore,Tommy Boy are all funny movies IMHO. They just are low brow and appeal to a younger generation. I find "Blazing Saddles" not that funny and I am sure Siskel and Ebert consider it a classic.

However they are dead on about Just Cause. The third act ruined that movie.

I could tell that Gene just wanted to slap those kids silly when they told him how much they liked "Mr. Payback". Like he wanted to grab them and shake them and say "DON’T YOU KNOW THAT THERE ARE BETTER FILMS OUT THERE, THIS IS WHY HOOP DREAMS DIDN’T GET NOMINATED, CAUSE OF MORONS LIKE YOU" lol

I loved the Brady Bunch Movie, but of course I can see why they didn’t. And speaking of, Billy Madison was a funny movie but it wasn’t anything great.

For me, Billy Madison actually has a parallel to Just Cause. Just Cause had a terrible third act, and Billy Madison has a horrible end sequence where they have a trivia contest to see who gets control. I felt that it killed Billy Madison, and that ending is mostly why I enjoyed Happy Gilmore much more than Billy Madison. Well, that and Bob Barker.

I have fond memories of my mom (herself a die hard Brady bunch fan) taking me to see The Brady Bunch Movie, and we both came out in stitches. Absolutely hilarious movie.

It’s hard to believe that Quiz Show and The Shawshank Redemption were actually construed as non-traditional studio films at the time.
