Two VERY different comedies.. one a smart parody, the other stupid but entertaining, both funny & both badly reviewed. And Perhaps the guys were so upset about ’Hoop Dreams’ they were unable to enjoy anything.
Any idea if you’ve got other shows from around the same period as this one? I noticed "Before Sunrise" mentioned on this show as a movie Siskel & Ebert had reviewed recently. I’ve been hoping the show with that review would be posted at some point ("Before Sunrise" is a favourite of mine).
"Mr. Payback" however, was an epic fail for an Interactive game played at movie theatres. Even Christopher Lloyd couldn’t save it, yet alone Billy Worth from "Baywatch".
Very interesting topic on Academy bashing for not nominating "Hoop Dreams" for "Best Documentary", considering that it was the best movie of all time. That segment is included on the Criterion DVD of "Hoop Dreams".
Billy Madison,Happy Gilmore,Tommy Boy are all funny movies IMHO. They just are low brow and appeal to a younger generation. I find "Blazing Saddles" not that funny and I am sure Siskel and Ebert consider it a classic.
However they are dead on about Just Cause. The third act ruined that movie.
For me, Billy Madison actually has a parallel to Just Cause. Just Cause had a terrible third act, and Billy Madison has a horrible end sequence where they have a trivia contest to see who gets control. I felt that it killed Billy Madison, and that ending is mostly why I enjoyed Happy Gilmore much more than Billy Madison. Well, that and Bob Barker.
