1995 was such a terrific year for movies. Even the bad movies in 1995 had a sort of grandeur to them. "Showgirls", "Waterworld", "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: the Movie"... If only we could get movie years like that more often.

Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers had "grandeur"? I haven’t seen it - and don’t plan to - but it’s amusing to see it described that way. :)

Wow, they really went all out and filmed a special opening just to use for this one episode. I was watching S&E regularly by this point, so surely I saw this when it aired. Yet I have no recollection of that intro.

Actually, (and I can’t believe I’m remembering this), I seem to recall that I was actually looking forward to this special when they promoed it. But I was most disappointed to find out that my local stations weren’t carrying this one-hour special. So I guess I never saw it.

1995 was a great year for cinema, but it was also one of the Academy’s worst as far as their selection of what was best. I can’t think of a more scattershot crop of chosen flicks in the last 20 years. I mean, when you’ve got a year with movies like Casino, Leaving Las Vegas, Dead Man Walking, Nixon, Seven, Heat, Twelve Monkeys or Toy Story, you don’t pass up in favor of Il Postino, Sense & Sensibility or Babe. Can’t believe they nominated LLV and DMW for best director without a best picture nod. Unbelievable. Even the tech categories were lackluster. Really? No Robert RIchardson for either Casino or Nixon? Horsesh*t.

I forgot how much Gene liked the first Babe. Ebert only gave that movie 3 stars when it came out. I’m glad Gene lived long enough to see Babe: Pig in the City and rank it as #1 in 1998.

Gene & Roger’s annual Oscar special, for the year 1995. Notably absent from these annual shows are their picks for Best Director. For some reason they don’t pick this category.
